Playing with Props
Every single moment of every day we project an image of our self. So does everyone else. For this we use a plethora of props, such as items of clothing, pens, glasses, and make-up to create an image, intentionally or unintentionally. As you observe someone and the way in which he/she accessorize, you can figure out what that person’s like. Your success rate depends on your level of understanding, and your ability to recognize and deduce what other people’s choice of props, or accessories, is revealing.
Regardless of the reason for which props are designed (glasses for reading or protecting our eyes from the sun, briefcases and handbags for holding items, and pens and pencils for writing), how you handle them reflects your state of mind. For example, you may check your briefcase and handbag repeatedly to set your mind at rest. You may throw things in annoyance. Your moods are exposed in the way you handle your props.
Below are some of the fiddling and tension-relieving activities that we may take part in-
Adjusting clothes : This action designates that the person is feeling uncomfortable. If you see someone making alterations to her clothes when none are needed, you’re correct in thinking that the person’s feeling tense.
Biting fingernails : This action is similar to the behavior of infants and provides reassurance. It’s also related to the gesture of putting your hand in front of your mouth to hold back a thought.
Playing with objects : Jingling change in pockets, clicking a pen, or fiddling with jewelry are deflecting signals indicating nervousness. Touching the objects provides sensory assurance, similar to holding a favorite toy when you were a child.
Running fingers through hair : When you’re feeling agitated you may find that your hand goes to your head and your fingers run along your scalp. This gesture is a soothing gesture, reminiscent of the hair ruffles you received as a child.
Shaking a shoe : Anxious energy building up like a pressure cooker has to come out somewhere. Although you may look calm, if you’re nervous, anxious, or excited, a wiggling foot gives your game away.
